Due to the layout of our staircase, traditional child safety gates do not wedge properly in between the opening. This led me to the Kiddy Guard Retractable Safety Gate. What's In The Box

The basic kit includes the retractable screen, 2 hooks, and all necessary screws for wall to wall installation. There are also 2 optional kits: wall installation kit (which I did purchase, but never used) for use with baseboards and banner installation kit for banister to banister installation. The wall installation kit isn't really needed if you can attach it directly to the studs behind the wall or situate the gate just above your baseboard molding. If you're handy enough, skip the wall installation kit and save yourself the $10.

Operation

The gate's operation is very much like a retractable window screen that we've seen so much of in the 80s. To release the lock on the screen, the safety button must be depressed and pushed in. This is a lot harder than it sounds as most of our adult house guests are barricaded like little children between our upper and lower level floors.

Most times our guests (Mary and I included) just swing a leg over it and get by. This type of "abuse" has created a tiny tear along the latch system. Fortunately the weave of the screen is quite good and the tear has little/no effect on its structural integrity.

Real World Use & Abuse

It's gone through its fair share of abuse: Jagger shaking it violently as he wants to get through, people climbing over it, screen retracting back at full speed, etc. The screen has some creases from not rolling back properly flat, but for the most part it has held up quite well.

Here's A Tip

After the screen's latch is attached to the hooks, I find that a little tug on the screen takes out the slack and confirms that it is properly latched in.

It's Noisy

Occasionally the fridge will make a large grumble sound lasting 5-10 seconds. The waterline isn't hooked up to it, so my guess is that it's trying to bring in water to store in it's reservoir for cooling. Otherwise there's a low frequency pitch while it's bringing temps down.

Apps

Memo: It's a virtual yellow Post-It app. You can create new memo's and have the option to pin them to the home screen. I've used it a few times to remind me of things, but I wish it was a little more sophisticated in when to show the memo. For example, if our dog has a vet appointment a month from now, I'd like to create a memo to remind me the week of. But there's no way for it to automatically do that. Either leave it attached to the home screen for a month or hopefully remember to pin it the week of. Photos: Cool app that lets you upload your pictures through the memory card slot (I forgot what type) or upload from your Google Picasa account. I found it easier to do the latter as it's much easier to get photos scattered across various computers onto Picasa compared to hooking up the card reader. One little annoyance is the "select all photos" toggle. It only selects all the photo's in the paginated display. You have to move to the next page and toggle it again. A bit annoying if you want to show off a 100 photo slideshow. Epicurious: I'm not the cook in the house, but my wife has cooked a few dishes while using the app. Mary said she prefers other recipe apps, but this will do. Google Calendar: I don't use Google Calendar so I can say much on how useful it is to have on the fridge. But from what I experimented with (arrrr...arrrrrr /Tim Allen) you can't add events directly to the calendar. You're only allowed to see what you may have entered from your computer. Weather Bug: I don't use this app all that much. Rather the weather display shown in the screensaver is what I rely on. I'm assuming though that it's powered by Weather Bug. AP News: I don't use this app all that much either. You can add it to the screensaver, but I took it out as I'm more interested in see my pictures. Pandora: Speaker quality is decent while listening to Pandora. You have to create your stations on your computer to listen to specific music categories. I already had a Pandora account so I don't know what happens when you first access Pandora w/o one. One major drawback is that the app cannot run in the background. There's no way to continue listening to music and then checking Epicurious for a recipe. Twitter: I don't use this app either. There's an option to add it to the screensaver rotation if you really need to keep up with Chloe and Lamar or any of your favorite celebs. Settings: Here you can turn on/off ice cube making, adjust the light options, etc. I haven't really tinkered with the settings other than to dial in the fridge/freezer temps and set the screensaver rotation.

Bottom Line

If you've got the extra cash, splurge for the LCD model. It adds a little extra to the kitchen. If I had to do it all over again I certainly wouldn't hesitate choosing the RF4289.
